5th Annual BSAS Prevention Conference

Digging Deeper: The Broader Contexts and Implications for our Prevention Efforts

Description

On December 3, 2018 the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS) in collaboration with the Massachusetts Technical Assistance Partnership for Prevention (MassTAPP) hosted a statewide conference for substance use prevention coalitions, agencies, and community representatives. This year’s conference explored the broader contexts of our work and their implications for our community efforts across three threads: Social Justice, Communications, and Leadership. It featured 3 keynote speakers, who each did a TED Talk-style presentation followed by Q&A for the morning plenary:

  • Julie Sweetland, Vice President of Strategy and Innovation, Frameworks Institute
  • Kassandra Frederique, New York State Director, Drug Policy Alliance
  • Luana Morales, Birth and Bereavement Doula, Death Midwife, Circle keeper, Officiant, Reiki Master Teacher, and Herbal Apprentice

The afternoon featured 6 different workshops that explored each of our three threads more deeply to allow for learning around both theory and application in the realm of prevention. In addition to workshops from our morning keynotes we were fortunate to be joined by the following esteemed professionals:

  • Andrea Nagel, Affiliate Consultant/Trainer at Interaction Institute for Social Change
  • Jonathan M. Gramling, Musician, Facilitator, Activist, Entrepreneur and Co-founder of Amp.it and Riahl O'Malley, National Education Director for United for a Fair Economy
  • Amaura Kemmerer, Director of the Office of Prevention & Education at Northeastern Universit

Any PowerPoints and related materials from the workshops are available for viewing and download below.
